CXWorx is now on a Thursday night Studio 1, 6.30pm.
What is CXWorx? It's a 30 minute core training workout which uses your body weight, resistance tubing and weights to tighten and tone your midsection. Exercises are designed to improve your functional strength for better mobility and injury prevention.

21/03/2017 - New Staffing Hours

Changes to our staffed opening hours are coming. Our membership fees have remained the same for many years. However not all our suppliers have been so generous and we have absorbed significant increases in our fixed costs. Rather than simply raising membership fees we’ve taken a close look at how members use the Club and are proposing to offset a membership price increase by reducing the staffed opening hours.

Instead of closing at 8:30pm, Monday – Thursday the Club will close at 8pm, as it already does on Friday. On Saturday the Club will close at 1pm, instead of 4pm. No change on Sunday.

The new staffed opening hours will be as follows:
Monday – Friday: 5:30am – 8pm
Saturday 7am – 1pm
Sunday 9am – 1pm

The new hours will come into effect from the 1st of April – no joke!

17/11/2016 - New Equipment arriving soon - StairMaster & HiiTMill

Maybe you've been fortunate enough to have travelled through Europe on your OE. You may even have climbed the Eiffel tower. Now you can relive the pain or better yet get a friend to experience what you went through!

We've had a few requests over the years for a StairMaster but they're eye wateringly expensive new. But when the local volunteer Fire Brigade asks for one what can you do? You bite the bullet and buy two!

We've opted for the more expensive touch screen which features the landmark challenge program - 11 landmark buildings to conquer, although you'll need more than good luck in getting to the top of the mighty Burj Khalifa at 255 stories!

But wait there's more - as past of the negotiations we managed to secure the very first StairMaster HiiTMill in New Zealand. This machine is like a treadmill on steroids. A great training tool for the Fire Brigade and our members.

In October we celebrated age awareness. It's safe to say that our participants loved the extra challenge of coming to our classes to stay fit and healthy. 
To celebrate their effort over the month we held a morning tea in honor of their hard work! Further, we are pleased to announce that our already popular Golden Class is no longer for just our Golden people. We are rebranding this fantastic class to incorporate a wider range of people.

We introduce... 4EverFit - "a low impact modified class combining many training aspects using bodyweight and equipment. Aimed at those wanting a softer, simpler approach to exercise."

( A % of fluid loss based on a Tanita Scale Measurement will be factored into this)

2) Physical Change. Girth Measurements ,Photo Change. (before and after), athletic and strength improvements will be the prime factors in this category.
(This is a new category and will recognise Change in 2 Participants EXCLUDING the overall Weight loss and Athletic Winners.

3) Athletic Champion Based on 1 Physical test at 8 am on Saturday the 10th of December
This will be split into 4 gender and age based categories and will be heavily weighted to test Cardiovascular Fitness and Strength 
In Addition there will be incentives/recognition throughout the challenge to reward those putting in the effort and making changes.

Although there are prizes available the emphasis will be on stimulating group trainings to create and force change.
It will be expected that there will be significant weight loss for those that are targeting this. A fitter and leaner body for everybody.

But most importantly a Confident Feeling that we only have when we are happy or content with our Physical Presence.

Here we go again! It's that time of the year where we prepare keen beans for the coming summer! Time is of the essence! Use this weight loss training program to your advantage to get motivated and get in shape before hitting up the summer holidays.
Like the previous challenges we've held there will be 2 teams (morning and evening). You train 3 times a week (Mon, Wed, Fri) either in the morning 6am or afternoon 6:30pm (only get to choose one of these times). At the end of each month there will be a team face off on the Sat morning (this will replace the Friday training for that week). 
Nutritional booklets will be handed out to guide your eating patterns through this period of time, as well as ongoing online guidance.

We are running a Group Fitness Challenge from Wednesday 3rd August - Wednesday 31st August.

How does it work?
The challenge will run each week from Wednesday - Tuesday and the deal is is that you have to attend one of each program on the timetable once within that week. Meaning, total amount of classes to attend each week is a maximum of 10.
For example, you have to attend one of the following classes within Wednesday - Tuesday:

We understand 10 classes can be a lot and not every class fits into everybody's lifestyle. However, it's about trying new classes and to help motivate you over these cold winter months. After you have attended the class the instructor will sign it off.

After each week there will be a draw and second chance draws for people involved. So doesn't matter if you only did 3 classes you still have a chance to WIN. You can join in the fun at anytime during the month.

Some of the staff are getting involved too so you get a chance to work out with them. Don't worry they won't be able to win your prizes!

If you ask, you often get at Counties Fitness. Someone mentioned a few weeks ago the four Spin bikes on the gym floor were looking a bit tired. They were right, so out they go and in comes five StarTrac NXT full commercial replacements.

That's right, every week, Thursday 6.00am will be GRIT STRENGTH!

What is CXWorx?
Exercising muscles around the core, a stronger core makes you better at all things you do, from everyday life to your favourite sports - it’s the glue that holds everything together.
All the moves in CXWORX have options, so it’s challenging but achievable for your own level of fitness. You will work with resistance tubes and weight plates, as well as body weight exercises like crunches, and hovers. You will also get into some hip, butt and lower back exercises.

What to expect in a LES MILLS GRIT STRENGTH workout?
GRIT Strength is a 30-minute high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workout, designed to improve strength and build lean muscle. This workout uses barbell, weight plate and body weight exercises to blast all major muscle groups.

10/05/2016 - Results from Members Boxing Match

Brownie would like to thank everyone on behalf of Adrienne Richardson and Claire Nesdale for your support and kind messages. Here is a run down of how Adrienne and Claire got on in their charity boxing match in Tauranga on Saturday 7th May.

"Firstly we had a great time. The event was well done and well run. 1st up fight was Claire Nesdale, mother of 2 vs a well built, younger, taller opponent, personal trainer, mother of 1. The first 2 rounds were a draw, the 3rd round basically punch for punch, and was as close as the first 2 rounds. The 3rd round and fight went to Claire's opponent narrowly, it was a split decision.

2nd fight, Adrienne Richardson, mother of 2, took a whole lot of punishment in the first round, through grit and determination came back strong in the 2nd round. In the 3rd round with nothing left in the tank she called on whatever she had left and took it to her younger opponent of 14 years. Until the final bell it was punch for punch. Adrienne's younger opponent had won too many points in the first 2 rounds, but as a coach I could not be any prouder of Adrienne's effort.

Well done ladies from a proud coach!"

06/05/2016 - Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge

The Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge taking place on Saturday 28 May, 2016, will be in its twelfth year as a fundraiser for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand.

Counties Fitness Member Martin Brough will be participating again this year. There is a fundraiser bucket at reception if you would like to donate (every little bit helps).

The event has a total of 850 participants and has grown in awareness and fundraising achievement to be an iconic event recognised around the country. Firefighters participate from around New Zealand, Australia and the USA, competing in a race up 51 flights, or 1,103 Sky Tower steps with participants wearing full firefighting kit weighing 25kg.

Special Mention....

Personal Training clients of Brownie Kingi; Claire Nesdale and Adrienne Richardson are fighting in a charity boxing match in Tauranga on Saturday 7th May. The charities are: Wish for Fish - where mentally and physically disabled children are taken on fishing trips. Second Charity is homes for mentally and physically abused children.

A special mention to Claire and Adrienne as these two ladies took this event on with only 2 weeks to prepare! Best of luck Claire and Adrienne with your boxing match this Saturday and for fighting for a great cause!

Shelly is competiting in her first Body Building competition this Saturday. With only a few months of hardcore training she looks amazing! Good luck this weekend Shelly from everyone at Counties Fitness!

Here is what Shelly has to say:

I have been chipping away at my fitness goals for the last 3 years and have lost over 20kgs myself, but this year I decided that I was going to push myself outside of my comfort zone and pursue something that was almost impossible to reach.
12 weeks ago I joined Counties Fitness, met Warren and told him I wanted to get on stage and compete. At the time I was 26% body fat and to get on stage I would need to get down to 12% in 12 weeks, which was going to require a solid plan, hard work and a small miracle!
So here I am, at 12% body fat and about to step on stage. This has been an incredible journey and I will never be the same! It’s so true that the only thing stopping us from achieving our goals is the limitations we place on ourselves. I pursued this goal thinking that I wouldn’t make it, but I was curious to see how far I would get and determined to get to the finish line.
I have put in almost 200 hours of gym time, 100 hours of meal prep time, and 40 hours of practising my routine. This has been one of the hardest goals I have pursued and I just took it day by day, focusing on making each workout, each meal and every choice count.
I am a mother of 3 young children, I run a IT business with my husband, and we have a pretty busy life. I could have easily found an excuse to give up, but there were so many people investing in me and cheering me on, on a daily basis that I was able to find the strength and courage to keep going. 
Thank you, to my husband and children for their unconditional love, commitment, dedication and belief in me. Their encouragement has made achieving this goal all the more fulfilling. Whenever I was feeling discouraged my husband (and second coach) would say to me that “the only person stopping me from getting on stage was myself, no one else”. 
Thank you to my coach Warren who has guided my physical transformation better than anyone! I have really had to trust him as a coach and he hasn’t let me down. I tell people I have lost fat and gained muscle by tripling the amount of food I normally eat, re-introducing carbs, and having an occasional meal off! I have thrived under Warren’s coaching because he has encouraged ‘balance’ between training, eating, sleeping and still being able to have fun with my family. Thank you Warren for both enabling and challenging me to chase this goal as hard and as fast as I wanted to. 
Thank you to Counties Fitness who let me volunteer in the crèche and in return gave me unlimited crèche & a free membership. This has been the make or break for me as I train 5-6 times a week and my kids have to come to the gym with me. Believe it or not, my kids have never complained about going to the gym crèche, instead they complain when I take rest days! 
Thank you to the girls that will be on stage with me for your support, inspiration & encouragement! And Thank you to everyone I bump into at the gym on a daily basis who make working out at the gym a lot of fun!

"Before and after photos are a great way to see how far you have come and mine speak volumes! There is about one year between these two images and approx 16kgs.

I have been coming to Counties Fitness on and off for around 6-7 years now. In this time I have also participated in two 12 week challenges between kids. My weight has always ?uctuated and little speed bumps in life haven’t helped.

A year ago, with the guidance of Personal Trainer, Warren, I decided to get into weight training to aid weight loss. We then set a goal of getting on stage. Family commitments meant I had to postpone my stage debut once but I will ?nally be getting up there this Saturday along side some amazing women!

Training has been long and intense with most of my spare time being at the gym I have had to make a lot of sacri?ces! It has all been totally worth it though and I can’t wait to get up on stage and then have some much needed down time with my family xx"

"Wow when I look at these 2 photos it reminds me of how far I have come.
The before photo was the beginning of my first challenge with Counties Fitness. From this challenge I met my current trainer Warren Young and so my journey began.
He saw something in me that has turned out to be the best thing thats ever happened.
I have trained at counties regularly over the years and done many different classes and challenges to mix it up and keep me motivated.
Along the way I have met some amazing trainers and friends and I now feel at home in the gym
My decision to do the body building came after the diagnosis of my 8 year old daughter with Type 1 Diabetes, I was also made redundant from my job 8 weeks later
I spent 6 months in a really dark place, eating and drinking to get me through. What I realised was that I needed to be a role model for my family and so the decision to do a competition began
There is over 20kgs difference between these photos, I have completely turned my life around
I feel like I did at 25. This has been one of the hardest things I have ever done.
Somedays I train twice a day, but I feel strong and healthy and proud.
On Saturday I will get on stage for the 2nd time in 5 months, with a bunch of like minded girls I have met along the way
I am 45, have 3 children and work full-time, Anything is possible. Yes its hard, Yes I question myself often, but I have learnt so much about myself along the way.
Never give up xxx"

An 8 week challenge with an emphasis on Physical and Cardiovascular Change.
Starts Monday 15th February
Training Times. Monday 6pm, Wednesday 7pm, Friday 7 pm, Saturday 6am 
Training sessions will be a combination of indoor and outdoor.
You are able to attend As Many sessions as you want.

A "Couple” is ANY 2 people * (male/female) and All results will be based on a Combined Result.

You will be competing in these Categories.
Weight Loss. A Combined % of Weight loss (A % of fluid loss based on a Tanita Scale Measurement will be factored into this)
Cardiovascular Challenge - Beep Test plus Endurance Run

In Addition there will be incentives/recognition throughout the challenge to reward those putting in the effort and making changes.

Although there are prizes available the emphasis will be on stimulating group trainings and the "Couples Dynamic" to create and force change.
It will be expected that there will be significant weight loss for those that are targeting this. A fitter and leaner body for everybody. 
Some significant strength strength/endurance gains
A better body composition. (That tight pair of pants is no longer tight)
But most importantly a Confident Feeling that we only have when we are happy or content with our Physical Presence.
As such this Challenge is more about Supporting a Mate / Each Other over 8 Weeks to Create Change - Than the Change Itself.

21/01/2016 - Blitz Personal Training - 12 Week Challenge

A new year comes with a need to get fit and healthy! We are restarting the 12 week challenge this year on the 23rd of February! 

There are 3 sessions a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) which are all outdoor. This training program is suitable for individuals whose fitness level are beginner to intermediate. If you are injured in anyway we can provide alternative exercises so you don't lose out! 
Throughout the challenge you can only choose to do 6:00am or 6:30pm sessions. Each day will have a different trainer so there's always something different! There will also be an end of month team challenge where the morning and evening team face off against each other! Uniform for each team provided of course.

There is an online system available so trainers can keep track of your daily nutrition and provide instant feedback. We will also be giving out nutritional and training booklets for you to keep.

If you don't know what the Golden Class is, it is a low impact impact cardio/strength & conditioning class designed for the senior community. Daffodil Day is the Cancer Society's annual flagship event in the country. As well as providing an opportunity to raise awareness of cancer in New Zealand, Daffodil Day is a major funding source for the Cancer Society.
The donations they receive go towards vital scientific research into the causes and treatment of all types of cancer, as well as providing a wide range of support services, information, health promotion and education programmes to reduce cancer risk, awareness campaigns and programmes for people affected by cancer.

Are you wanting to start using our free weights, machines and barbells but not sure how? Have a goal in mind, but not sure how to achieve it?

Did you know you're entitled to a free programme and assessment with your membership. This is with one of our friendly gym instructors. They can assist you with your training goal whether it's gain strength, lose weight, gain muscle .... even a planned event or if you're trying to get into the police force.

What's involved? An assessment on our Tanita Scales reading muscle mass, body fat %, water retention, metabolic age plus more. Then our gym instructor will go through your goals and give you a specific individual program to follow with either our weights and/or cardio equipment. After the consolation, this information is recorded on a card for you. This program can be updated every 6 - 8 weeks for free.

All you need to do is book in at reception!

AUGUST - GROUP FITNESS CHALLENGE

Members and non-members, we are running a Group Fitness Challenge for the month of August.

AIM: To do as many classes as you can in the month of August....

- This is your chance to step out of your comfort zone and try classes you haven't before!

FIRST PRIZE: A golf day a Kaye Maxwell's Golf Club for you and 3 friends. This prize includes a golf lesson, free ball and golf club hire + nibbles and bubbles at the end.

There will also be spot prizes handed out in classes this month.

Have a friend who is interested but isn't a member? They can join in on the competition and pay $30 for 30 days (terms and conditions apply).

Collect your Group Fitness Passport from reception and see them for any questions. You can join in on the challenge at anytime during the month of August, however the sooner you get to classes and get them signed off the higher the chances of winning!

Challenge starts Saturday 1st August, finishes Monday 31st August.

22/07/2015 - Blitz Personal Training 12 Week Challenge

It's that time again! The time when winter passes and summer is coming around the corner. But before it arrives we want to get in shape! 3 words.... 12 Week Challenge!

There are 3 sessions a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) which are all outdoor. This training program is suitable for individuals whose fitness level are beginner to intermediate. If you are injured in anyway we can provide alternative exercises so you don't lose out!

Throughout the challenge you can onl...y choose to do 6:00am or 6:30pm sessions. Each day will have a different trainer so there's always something different! There will also be an end of month team challenge where the morning and evening team face off against each other! Uniform for each team provided of course.

There is an online system available so trainers can keep track of your daily nutrition and provide instant feedback. We will also be giving out nutritional and training booklets for you to keep.

GRIT is a 30 minute high intensity interval training class. Class numbers are smaller in size and work more along the basis of a small group training session. Options are provided so you can start low and as you get fitter take higher options and begin to move with more speed

12/06/2015 - Maybe we've gone to far....

The speakers were installed for the new Group Fitness studio last night. They're probably a little larger than most people were expecting :) But we like to cover all the bases here at Counties Fitness. The distributor tells us they're suitable for audiences of up to 10,000. In other words perfect for Heidi's Tuesday morning Pump class!

To celebrate the opening of the new studio we're planning on having an opening party on the evening of Saturday the 27th of June. Tickets will be available to members plus partner only. Numbers will be strictly limited to avoid disappointment you'll need to act quickly and put your name down at reception. A cash bar will be operating and nibbles will be provided. More details available next week.

Mangatawhiri Dam to Miranda Hot Pools

Leg 1 23 km Bush Run/Walk/Tramp/Crawl

Leg 2 3 km Unpowered Water Craft (i.e. kayak)

Leg 3 20km Road Bike

(Note all distances are approximate..... No really they are approximate)

This is a challenging fun event for mixed teams of three.

(In the event that a team is comprised of only males or females that team will have to dress one of their members in the opposite genders attire.)

All three team members MUST do all 4 legs together AND finish together.

(Serious injury or death won't constitute pulling a team member out)

Staggered start seeded at the total discretion of the event manager.

1st wave 7am start Last wave 7.20am start.

We will finish with a prize giving at Miranda Hot Pools.

Course Notes (Given the terrain All distances and times are approximate)

Start : Managatawhiri Dam start has good car parking and a toilet facility and is found on the. western side of the Hunuas at the Paparimu end.

Leg 1: 4.2 ks Is a service road run on a metal surface. The 1st 3 k's are all up a steep gradient that will challenge the heart and lungs then settles in to an undulating ridge run. There is a toilet at the end of the road.

You then head out on the 18 km bush section which Starts on the Rata Track with a easy downhill/flat Bush Run.

15-20 mins in you turn sharply left onto the Managatangi Ridge Track which Starts with a Steep descent to cross the Mangatawhiri River followed by a long steep ascent to 500m.

The track is well marked with orange markers but is narrow and at times blocked by obstacles.

It will be a combination of crawling / walking / tramping / jogging / running.

At the top there are magnificent views over the Firth of Thames.

At the end of the bush run you will turn right then left onto the Waharau Ridge Track before an easy descent into the Waharau Regional Park.

Follow the metal/sealed road out of the Park crossing the coast road to the Transition.

Leg 2: 3ks Starts with a short carry of your water craft over beach "rocks" to the Firth of Thames and a paddle heading north before rounding a large Bouy before returning to the beach.

This leg can be done in any unpowered water craft and you may assist team mates by towing and/or rowing them or their craft. Life Jackets MUST be worn.

In the event that the sea is too rough (i.e Hurricane) Leg 3 will turn into a Bike.

Leg 3: 20km Road or Mountain Bike. This is a Flat sealed Bike South on the Coast Road turning left onto Miranda Road to the Miranda Hot pools.

(Note in the inaugural race last year most teams underestimated how tough this section would be.....just saying)

Finish Soak in the Hot Healing Waters of Miranda with a Cool Refreshment and a Fatty Burger and Share War Stories.

Monday Gloat in the Gym to all who Didn't have the Kahunas to give it a GO.

Note : It will be each teams responsibility to get their waka and bikes to the transition area at. Waharau.

Note 2 : Waharau will be a great place for supporters to be as they can catch the run finish, watch the kayak leg and see the start of the bike leg.

But most importantly watch the Panic and Chaos and Tears.

05/02/2015 - Nigel & Heidi Fromm Taking on the 100km Tarawera Ultramarathon

Counties Fitness Personal Trainers, Nigel and Heidi Fromm are competing in the 100km Tarawera Ultramarathon; a point to point run from Rotorua to Kawerau. The Tarawera Ultramarathon is a world-class event where the majority of the run is on single-track trails through native bush or forestry roads with less than 5% being on a sealed public road.

05/12/2014 - New Smart Plates

The smart bar plates are there to compliment the existing plates. They'll be used for the tracks in BodyPump where plates are used without bars. The smartbar after many weeks of testing and listening to feedback from members offered nothing and were more difficult to use than the existing Don Oliver bars/plates. So the Club has been forced to end up with a mixture of both in order to offer the best experience for members.

The club is pleased to announce a new and hopefully useful piece of technology was installed today near the entrance to the men's changing rooms. It's a 42in touchscreen that allows you to look up and see a demonstration of hundreds of different exercises.



Super easy to use and great for beginners who've forgotten what a particular exercise is, right up to experienced members who're just looking for different options. Don't be afraid to have a play with it.

04/11/2013 - Virtual classes

The computer controlling the virtual classes has died. Until a replacement is sourced there will be no virtual classes with the exception of virtual CXWorx on Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30am which will have real instructors for the time being.

13/09/2013 - Type 2 Diabetes

The Club has just bought a blood glucose meter. I'm thinking of offering the test to those who in their initial assessment fit the risk profile for type 2 diabetes. Nothing will happen until I have consulted with a physician to ensure our testing methodology is spot-on and there is no risk of missing a warning sign. The equipment we have purchased is of high quality from a NZ distributor of diabetic equipment.

As I mentioned I intend to offer the test to members whose profile fits the risk curve for type 2 diabetes and if practical 12 week challenge participants. This data will be used in conjunction with the advanced body composition software we use which can also track blood pressure along with the usual body fat and other measurements. Together these tests should provide really positive feedback to members who are struggling with their weight, while saving a lot of money in doctors bills and potentially alerting members to a very serious disease.

My thinking around all of this is that I can't control what members get up to while they're not in the Club. But I can show them the impact of their lifestyle outside the Club and hopefully show them positive results when they make the necessary changes. My intention is NOT to charge for administering the tests as I believe by providing this additional level of service we may save a few lives firstly and secondly may help a few members continue with Counties Fitness who may otherwise have slipped between the cracks and disappeared. For those who don't fit the risk curve but are interested to see their results then there will be a nominal charge to cover the cost of the test itself.

06/03/2013 - $500 Competition

Head's up people (Army talk). We're launching a competition shortly... $500 to anyone who can do 43 of the 44 exercises in the linked video. It's not going to be easy, but life is hard and so am I :)

There are terms and conditions of course, but they're pretty simple, you must have been a member for the previous three months to begin the challenge. You will receive a 'Passport' that must be signed off by a Fitness instructor for each exercise you attempt and pass. The number of reps or duration will be set out in the passport. It will not be easy and there will be different goals depending on whether you are male or female. But it is not first to the post. IF YOU MANAGE TO ACHIEVE IT, you will take home $500, simple. It will run to the end of 2013 guaranteed and possibly beyond. So plenty of time to train towards achieving it.

No more than 5 exercises can be attempted at any one time and failure of one will end the session. Attempts must be booked in advance at reception to ensure the availability of a Fitness instructor.

A TV will shortly be mounted on the ground floor that will loop the video constantly to show the 43 exercises. The video will show 44 exercises but you are not required to do the backwards flip burpee!

Of course I have done the lot ;) (In my dreams). It is not open to staff including Crossfit staff.

Les Mills virtual classes launch today!

What's it all about?
It's an extra 21 'Virtual' Les Mills classes each week. Using a projector to display classes taught by Les Mills own master instructors.

No it's not going to replace real instructors, but it will allow us to run classes in time slots where the numbers don't allow for real instructors or we don't have an instructor for a program i.e. Sh'Bam. It's just a trial at the moment and we're one of only three Clubs Les Mills has selected in the country to trial the system. If no one uses it then fine, but your feedback is incredibly important so please give it a go and let us know what you think!

The new RPM studio is now open for business! It's huge improvement over the old studio and comfortably holds 30 bikes. The old studio is now just a distant memory having already been demolished. The free space this has created upstairs is amazing. The front is now just a couple of weeks away from being finished...

20/07/2012 - CrossFit comes to Pukekohe

In a joint venture with Linda Begg the highly popular CrossFit training system has come to Pukekohe.

So what is CrossFit?

The official answer is; "constantly varied, high intensity, functional movement". In other words it's all about achieving real world fitness, preparing you for anything and everything. It doesn't focus on any one area of fitness instead CrossFit encompasses the 10 fundamental measurements of fitness.

  • Cardiovascular/respiratory endurance - The ability of body systems to gather, process, and deliver oxygen.
  • Stamina - The ability of body systems to process, deliver, store, and utilize energy.
  • Strength - The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply force.
  • Flexibility - the ability to maximize the range of motion at a given joint.
  • Power - The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply maximum force in minimum time.
  • Speed - The ability to minimize the time cycle of a repeated movement.
  • Coordination - The ability to combine several distinct movement patterns into a singular distinct movement.
  • Agility - The ability to minimize transition time from one movement pattern to another.
  • Balance - The ability to control the placement of the bodies' centre of gravity in relation to its support base.
  • Accuracy - The ability to control movement in a given direction or at a given intensity.

CrossFit classes generally involve small groups of participants engaging a variety of timed exercises with the goal of improving fitness in the 10 areas listed above. You are under the direct supervision of a CrossFit certified trainer (be wary of other programs with similar sounding names they are not CrossFit and are simply trying to take advantage of the CrossFit brand). There are over 3,000 CrossFit affiliates around the world. The Frank brothers of All Blacks fame were so impressed with the system they opened their own CrossFit facility in Christchurch. 

The environment is very supportive with participants encouraging each other and importantly you do not need to be in peak physical form to participate, people of all ages and all levels of fitness are welcome and will benefit equally. CrossFit is an excellent program for existing Gym members looking for some variety in their routine and it's great for people who struggle to stay motivated in a typical Gym environment.

A news update because a lot is happening....

The new RPM studio is starting to take shape and in a couple of weeks it should be finished and ready to go. The builders will get straight onto finishing the front.

But wait there's more...

To keep ahead of the curve we're ordered loads more equipment for the ground floor. A new 7 degree Smith machine, a monster 9 station Crossover, a Hoist Chin-up machine and a new rack of Urethane Dumb bells. Enjoy!

16/05/2012 - Rewi Mark wins the Sam Taylor award

One of our own Rewi Mark has just been awarded the Sam Taylor award for the best up and coming Les Mills instructor in New Zealand. This is a very prestigious award in the industry and Rewi was up against some stiff competition.

"Sam Taylor is an award established 5 years ago by Steven Renata and Emma Barry two of the Les Mills founding Instructors in memory of Sam who passed away and was their mentor.

Sam Taylor was a mentor in Dunedin and eventually shifted to Australia. He was renowned for spotting talent and mentoring them through to absolute success within our industry. He not only did this in the Group Fitness arena he also did this in the Personal training world and Fitness First in Australia also have a Sam Taylor award for up and coming Fitness Professionals.

This year saw the most talented group of young instructors we have ever seen and with over 20 entries, the judging went from 1 day to over a week and a half.

The world's best were the judges from Program Directors through to the Les Mill's CEO the judging went right to the wire.

Rewi shone because of his natural charisma on stage, his connection to the people, his complete, his complete real attitude and at the same time total respect for the program and all current coaching models. He understood what he was doing and why and did it in a way that was completely Kiwi and in essence.

The four finalists will go on to becoming the next generation of leaders and with Les Mills now being in over 80 countries and there being nearly 13 million people exercising to our programs each week. We can be proud that the next world leaders started in Pukekohe at Counties Fitness. Rewi is a tribute to our country and our culture and from Les Mills New Zealand we know that these type of role models are imperative to the success of our children's health and well-being. Kia Kaha Rewi he will be supported by One Tribe that is changing the world."

03/05/2012 - Kid's room on-line booking

Thanks to the overwhelming support of our members the system is working beautifully. Parents are happy, staff are happy and the little ones don't seem to care either way! Remember from now on if you make a booking by phone or in person at reception there is a $2 surcharge! But honestly it is far quickly to do it on-line. If you don't have internet access then there is a computer in the Kids room to make bookings.

03/05/2012 - Renovations...

Yes that old nugget renovations is news worthy once again! The builders have made a start on the new RPM studio but things have once again ground to a halt due to the council and landlord squabbling yet again. This time it's about whether or not the building is two stories. In addition we need to install an elevator - yes an elevator! This is because the first floor now exceeds a certain size which requires an elevator for disabled access. This is going to cost a significant sum of money but must be done to comply with the relevant legislation.

I am told the council should give the go ahead to finish the new RPM studio in around two weeks, but don't hold your breath, I'm certainly not! We will get there eventually, but the reality is the Club has never looked better and there is nothing I can do to speed the process up. But once it all starts to happen there will be some very big changes to the layout on the ground floor as well as the first floor. 

10/04/2012 - Kids room booking system is live

The Kids room on-line booking system is now live. All bookings from the existing system have been moved to the new system.

Phone bookings will still be accepted without additional charges under the end of the month. After that a $2 surcharge will apply for phone bookings or bookings made at reception. You can use the Kids room computer to make bookings if you do not have internet access  - in which case you're probably not reading this...

The new system is designed to make it faster and reduce errors. You can check your current bookings and delete them. Bookings can be made right up till the session start time (space permitting).

29/03/2012 - On-line Kids room booking system

In an effort to make it easier for you and us. Our amazing website developer Eric has come up with an on-line booking system for the Kids room. It's fast and it's convenient. Bookings can be made and cancelled right up to the beginning of a session. If you follow us on Facebook - and you should to get up to date info - you'll already be aware of this news.

The Kids room is a not for profit service provided to parents who would otherwise not be able to use the Club. All money collected remains with-in the Kids room for operational expenses. It is run by a group of volunteer mums who sacrifice their time in return for a free membership. The Club contributes to the Kids room for major expenses such as air conditioning, rent and major improvements.

A few months ago it became clear that a booking system was needed to control the numbers, that system has under gone a number of tweaks to provide maximum flexibility for our members. But the administration load on the reception staff to take bookings for up to four weeks in advance with different combinations of children and times has resulted in to many mistakes, no shows and to be frank far to much administration. For your information the numbers are limited to 15 in total with a maximum to two under 1's.

So instead of being more restrictive on bookings, we have instead developed an on-line booking system that will result in a win - win scenario for the Club and parents. Here's how it's going to work.... Up until Monday the 9th of April, feel free to make practise bookings - all the data entered up until this time will be deleted so make as many bookings as you wish (but they are not actual bookings). As of Tuesday the 10th of April the system will go live - if you are a current user then there are handouts explaining what's happening in the Kids room. For the rest of April we will accept both phone/in person bookings and on-line bookings. As of the 1st of May if you make a booking either in person or by phone you will incur an additional $2 charge. This is a fair reflection on the cost of processing that booking by our staff - we strongly encourage you to use the on-line booking system! By doing so you can easily make a booking, cancel a booking or check to see what bookings you have made. We ask that you cancel your booking if you are not going to make it to the Club in order to free up a space for another parent. Failure to do so may result in a short term ban on making further bookings.

Take note that where there are back to back classes there are two Kids room sessions to choose from. If you are only doing one class then only book for one session even if you are showering afterwards.

28/03/2012 - Renovations...

We're close, very close to getting the upstairs renovations finished. The problem has been the council and the landlord squabbling with one another about technical stuff. The bottom line is don't argue with the council otherwise your planning consent will remain at the bottom of the heap. Ultimately it's my business that's affected, but I am merely a pawn in all of this. So the current plan to separate the area of contention (expanding the Group fitness studio) and get consent for moving the RPM studio downstairs and finishing of the front (upstairs).

The enlargement of the Group Fitness studio will take place once the Landlord and Council have finished with one another. I had hoped this would be done and dusted by now and have already taken delivery of an additional 27 Reebok steps to bring the total up to 75 in anticipation of a much larger main studio. So the Club has done its bit but the council and Landlord have not. Very frustrating, but my hands are tied.

In anticipation of the Group fitness studio being expanded by now I ordered an additional 27 Reebok steps three months ago. Alas the steps have arrived but the extra space in the studio has not. So now we have 75 steps but not enough room to use them all. But can you imagine a step class with 75 participants!

It's going to happen soon, but not soon enough!

25/02/2012 - Changes to Kids room bookings

With immediate effect members will be able to bring there children in without a booking. But you run the risk of the booking sheet being full. We set a limit of 15 children (2 x under 1's and 13 over 1's). The booking sheet is the bible regardless of how many kids are in the Kids room (since we don't know when the others who are booked may arrive).

We do ask that if you're not going to make it that you let us know to free up a slot for someone else.

17/02/2012 - A couple of very big announcements.....

Very shortly, the Club will be going to a 24/7 format. Staffed hours will remain the same, but those who want to be able to use the Club outside of normal hours will be able to do so. It's been in the works for a year or so, but a lot of technical and physical issues needed to be addressed. The reception area has been moved allowing it to be shut off from the main gym area with the side benefit of creating some more much needed space on the main floor. The Club has been fitted out with CCTV cameras, allowing for remote monitoring. Entry will be via the back door (with cameras covering the rear carpark). Some very clever technology has also been installed from Infranet Systems which will handle arming and disarming the alarm, turning lights on and off and panic buttons. The owner of Infranet, Bretten Holland together with our website developer Eric Bergquist of Behind the Web have overcome a number of technical challenges to make it all happen. Both are highly recommended!

You might ask who is going to want to use the Club at 3am, not many probably. But based on the feedback we've received from current members there are plenty who would use the Club at 3pm on a Sunday, or 8:30pm once the kids are in bed, or shift workers before or after work.

The other big story is dealing with a side of business I have always struggled with, namely gym contracts. It's the one area of the business that the general public have real misgivings about. There are to many horror stories of high pressure sales tactics resulting in people signing long contracts with to much fine print to digest. From a industry perspective, we reward customers who sign long contracts with a lower price, which is fine for those who make use of the Club throughout the term of their contract. But who knows what your situation will be 6 months from now let alone 2 or 3 years from now. But the bottom line from my perspective is that contracts are a bone of contention for many and make it very difficult for people to commit to a gym, as they can't afford a short term membership but can't or don't want to commit to a long contract. So if it's wrong then it needs to be fixed. So we're fixing it. Starting from the 27th of February we will be switching to a no contract format. New members will only need to give one months notice to cancel their membership. There will be some cash up front options for those who prefer it or who have a poor credit rating (to reduce our overheads of chasing people for missed payments). For current members on a contract you will be able to switch over once your minimum term has been completed. If you have already completed your minimum term then you are already on a no contract basis and need only look at switching contracts if the new rates are cheaper (and for many they'll be better of just continuing on their current membership plan).

10/02/2012 - 12 Week Challenge

All 30 spaces have been taken and there's a few people that have missed out, so the moral of the story is to get in quick and not leave it to the last minute! The first of the mini challenges starts this Monday with the teams competing to do as many group fitness classes in a month as they can manage.

This means classes are going to be busier than usual, we're adding an additional BodyPump class on Friday mornings (6am). We will add more classes should the need arise. The group fitness studio will be expanding in the near future to accommodate 80 participants, which will take the pressure off for future challenges and cater for the continuing popularity of the Les Mills programmes.

Good luck to everyone, if past challenges are anything to go by there's going to be some happy but tired participants in 12 weeks time!

17/01/2012 - Update

The boxing area is now up and running. Still waiting for the Aussies to supply the two speed bag platforms. Also had a couple of hiccups with the bags falling out of the ceiling! Now sorted out with some heavy duty mounting points.

With regard to the rest of the building..... No progress grrrrr. Reason being the council has asked for an emergency lighting system be included and the man responsible is on holiday. Once we have the necessary council approvals things should happen fairly quickly. The RPM studio will move downstairs and the void will be filled in to increase the group fitness studio capacity. For the RPM fans out there you'll be pleased to hear all the bikes will be replaced with more Bodybikes. The new ones have stainless steel everything which means no corrosion, which in turns means no problems adjusting the seat and handle bar post height. Also they'll come equipped with kevlar brake-pads which require no lubrication meaning no change in the resistance. Unlike the current leather brake-pads which require frequent oiling which in turn changes the resistance. Look for a February date for the install.

I'm gagging to tell you all about another big change coming but for commercial reasons I can't just yet - but it will be pretty exciting for some of our members. The move of the reception area has worked out well, with the extra space now devoted to the new boxing area. There will also be a major reorganisation of the ground floor once the top floor is sorted.

The new Les Mills CXWorx class has gone down a storm. It's a 30 minute core workout using for want of a better word 'rubber bands'. 44 of you turned up last Sunday morning, so I strongly encourage our other 1,200 members to give it a go - just not all at once! Les Mills is the worlds most popular group fitness system for a good reason, it's simply the best.

Our Hoist ROC-IT line of pin loaded strength equipment is about to be added to with the addition of a glute machine.

19/12/2011 - New boxing area

After much deliberation and chatting to members the big new area formerly occupied by reception will be turned into a dedicated boxing area. Most of the new equipment arrived today and will be installed shortly. In keeping with out best in class philosophy all equipment is being supplied by NZBoxer New Zealand's premier boxing equipment supplier.

Couple of height adjustable speed bag platforms.


A number of punch bags.



A couple of floor to ceiling bags.



Two wall punch bags.



One free standing punch bag.



Now this is not to say the Technogym Kinesis system (see previous news item) isn't going to happen, but even if we ordered it today it wouldn't arrive from Europe for around 12- 14 weeks, so we have to do something with the area in the meantime. In addition to make it financially worthwhile we would need to be seeing patient referrals from physiotherapists (it is medically certified), to be worthwhile and changes to ACC mean we won't know if this is possible until March.

Regardless of that the boxing area can be relocated should we proceed with Kinesis. Boxing by the way is a great way of keeping fit, if you don't believe me then just try one of Linda's box and burn classes or book a session with a PT.

07/12/2011 - Your opinion please

All the regulars would have noticed by now that the reception area has now moved into the old entry foyer. There are a couple of reasons for this, only one of which I can reveal at this time. Reason number one is space, our membership has expanded a great deal over the years and I want to keep ahead of the curve and ensure we don't have issues with over crowding. By moving reception I estimate we have freed up 25% more space on the ground floor.

The big picture is all the cardio equipment currently located on the ground floor will move upstairs. Following this will be a major reshuffle of the layout on the ground floor. I've never been happy with the free weights area in particular and this will be sorted out with the extra space created by the removal of the cardio equipment.

As for the former reception area I'm currently exploring a few exciting options. One of which is particularly exciting. European company Technogym produces the Kinesis line of equipment which will add a new dimension for training. Rather than trying to explain it here's a video of it in action with some of the UK's toughest soldiers the Marines.



The possibilities are endless, there are something like 550 different exercises possible. It's medically certified so ideal for injury rehabilitation. A great tool for personal trainers and high performance athletes. There are currently only two in the country one in Les Mills Wellington and another in a Physiotherapist clinic on the North Shore. Why so few? Cost.... But I truly believe it will offer another dimension to training that cannot be replicated. We are already a world class facility and this would represent the icing on the cake. However it is by no means a done deal. I will be canvassing members for their opinion. So members if you are reading this please email me your opinion if I hear nothing then nothing will happen...

06/12/2011 - The group fitness studio is getting...

Bigger! We are now hitting maximum capacity for some classes. As a result the studio is about to get bigger. A lot bigger, current capacity is 55+/-, new capacity will be 80+. The void will be filled in and the studio walls will move back into the current cardio area. The new area won't be a perfect rectangle but will nonetheless be big enough to cope with numbers for the foreseeable future. For a small town we really shouldn't need to expand to a studio this size but clearly the demand is there. Building work will commence shortly and I would hope we're ready to go sometime in February.

The RPM studio will be moving downstairs into a couple of vacant shops. Regarding RPM I know all you RPMers have been frustrated a) with the state of the studio and b) with the state of the bikes. a) will be taken care of with the new studio and b) by either getting new RPM bikes or a ground up rebuild of the existing bikes. The biggest problems with the current fleet is the dodgy resistance setting and the difficulty on some bikes of adjusting the seat/handle bar height. The resistance setting problems are caused the leather strap Bodybike use, it needs to be sprayed with oil from time to time and this completely changes the characteristics of the resistance. There is an upgrade from BodyBike which consists of a Kevlar brake which doesn't require lubrication, this is being investigated at the moment. The other issue with the seats/handle bars is also being addressed with a complete strip down repaint and replacement of the plastic sleeves which are the root cause. I would rather go down this root than replace them with a cheaper but inferior spin bike. Until BodyBike release a new version that addresses a couple of other minor issues I'm not prepared to replace them with new BodyBikes that are essentially the same.

01/12/2011 - Changes to the timetable

Some changes to the timetable. CXWORX the new 30min core program from Les Mills makes it's debut on the timetable on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Judging by reactions so far it's going to be huge!

Also BodyJam makes way for SH'BAM. Over 40 turned out for its first showing since open day last week so a great start to a new program. Here's Les Mills description of what SH'BAM is all about.

19/11/2011 - Open Weekend Timetable

Our next Open Weekend is the 26th and 27th of November. The Club will be open to all free of charge. This Open Weekend is a bit special for a couple of reasons. This will be our first Open Weekend to feature our brand new cardio equipment from American company TRUE Fitness. It represents a huge leap forward in technology and quality compared to anything in Franklin or for that matter pretty much any Club in the country. If you have an iPod or iPhone then plug it in to listen to music or watch videos on the 15in touchscreen display. In fact you can control your iPod/iPhone from the touchscreen! Once the new antenna cabling is installed you'll also be able to watch TV.

In addition we will be introducing two new Les Mills programs. Sh'Bam is a dance program featuring hot music and easy to learn dance moves. The other program is CXWORX, this is a short 30min program that focuses on your core, it's proven to be a huge hit at Les Mills and the feedback from our members who have participated in our trial classes has been fantastic - not to be missed!

18/10/2011 - New cardio equipment installed

Over the weekend the old cardio equipment went and some of the new TRUE cardio equipment arrived. In keeping with our philosophy of providing 'best in class' equipment the new cardio equipment features cutting edge features to keep members motivated and provide a results orientated workout. All the new equipment feature a 15in touchscreen interface that is simple to use and packed full of features.  Plug in your iPod/iphone and control it from the touchscreen to watch videos or listen to music. A built in TV allows you watch what you want instead of being stuck with the Clubs choice.

The other major improvement are the ease of access to the build in programs. Within a couple of seconds you will be working out at the correct intensity for your goals - the heart rate control programs are particularly good.

TRUE is an American company and a major player in the global fitness industry. Most New Zealand Clubs opt for cheaper Chinese equipment often poorly designed and manufactured. The feedback from members has been great and I can honestly say we are up there with the very best Clubs in New Zealand.

But it gets better what is currently installed is less than half of the order, once the front of the building has been completed the remainder will be installed. Ten treadmills, ten crosstrainers, eight upright bikes and two recumbent bikes. This will mean there should never be a situation where a treadmill, crosstrainer or bike is not available.

01/10/2011 - Speed ball

Not really news I suppose but worth posting nonetheless. The Club has one speed bag platform that I've been hammering away on for a while. It's one of those exercises that if you aren't taught the basics you'll never bother with it as it looks to difficult. I managed to master the basics thanks to watching a few videos on Youtube. Since then I've passed on the knowledge to as many members as I can. Recently I've discovered the true extent of what can be done. Turns out there's a guy in the States by the name of Alan Kahn who is recognised as being the master of the speed bag. I've been in contact with him and a set of his instructional DVD's is winging its way from Texas to Pukekohe. To see Alan working the speed bag is inspirational to say the least. Not only is he a master of the speed bag but a bloody nice guy to boot as he has thrown in a couple of speed bags at no extra cost!

Yet another delivery at the beginning of the week. This time it's more Technogym plate loaded strength equipment. Technogym is a world leader and the equipment in the Club is the same as used by olympic athletes at the Beijing Olympic games. To complement the existing incline and decline chest press we have now added a row, shoulder press and leg press.

 

16/09/2011 - BOX & BURN!

The title say's it all. If you're looking for a class to push you to the edge of your performance envelope and beyond then look no further. Taken by our own pocket rocket Linda this is a high energy class using hanging bags and gloves. If you're a glutton for punishment then this is for you. Numbers are limited and there is a charge of $10, but Linda guarantees you'll get your money's worth!

16/09/2011 - What's happening in your Club (novel).

A ton of updates.

Firstly the builders are on their final push to get the new frontage finished. But there's plenty more going on. We're in final negotiations with our gracious landlords to take over the lease for two of the small shops at the front of the building. These will be combined to give us the new location for the RPM studio. The old studio will be demolished to make way for the new cardio area upstairs. This will be by far the biggest in Franklin, I guarantee you will not have to queue for a piece of cardio equipment! Sitting in a warehouse not far from the Club right now are 10 new treadmills, 10 new crosstrainers, 8 upright bikes and 2 recumbent bikes.

In keeping with my philosophy of providing the very best available equipment these new cardio machines all have build-in touch screen displays. The displays have build-in TV's and full iPod/iPhone compatibility. Manufactured by American company TRUE fitness they represent the cutting edge in QUALITY design, engineering and functionality. When you step through the door at Counties Fitness you can be assured you'll be using equipment that meets or better's that found in top Clubs around the world.

Once the dust has settled I have a couple of other big announcements pending that will put a simile on a lot of faces. It's hard to believe how far the Club has come over the past five or so years, our core of loyal members have been joined by many others over the years and to be honest it's the positive feedback and interaction with the family that is Counties Fitness that makes me and the rest of the team look forward to each and every day. It's been a great journey so far and I look forward to the years still to come.

What else is happening, Linda Begg an amazing Personal trainer turned up on our doorstep a few months ago. Formerly with another local Club their loss has very much been our gain. This woman has more energy than the space shuttle and has slotted in nicely alongside Nigel, Heidi and Zara our resident Personal trainers. She has just launched Box & Burn a group boxing class on every Friday at 6:30pm (see the separate news item). Welcome Linda!

The xDream mountain bike simulators have proven to be a real hit - almost to much so with some members addicted to them. They are the only two in the country and cost the Club some serious dollars (which I guess why they're the only two in the Country).

The other new pieces of equipment that have gone down a storm are the Absolo machines, last time I heard it was us and one other enlightened Club that has them. Basically they put a bit of fun into abdominal exercise and you can read more about them in a previous news post.

The twice yearly 12 Week challenge has kicked off, as usual for this time of year it's full and the 30 participants are well into their work. Most Clubs use this type of program as a marketing tool to get new members but ours is very different in that most who start will finish and get a great result to boot. Instead of training by yourself you're placed in a team and have team challenges all the way through to stay motivated. It's not uncommon to see weight losses of more that 20kg for some participants. Right now the teams are battling to see who can complete the most group fitness classes in a month (the record is 93!). They will then move onto the U.S Army physical fitness test which involves a lap around the Pukekohe Motorsport circuit.

17/05/2011 - Sad news

Despite our best efforts Fabio has lost his battle to remain in NZ. A fantastic instructor who will be sorely missed. Many thanks to all those who submitted letters to immigration on his behalf. Over 250 people signed the petition at the Club and more than 600 on the save Fabio Sampaio page on Facebook. It won't be the same without you.

It's been happening unofficially for a long time but the Club is now officially open from 5.30am Mon - Friday. Weekend hours remain the same.

After a 10 day trial in the Club the overwhelming response from our members was - WE WANT THESE BIKES. So they're back and this time to stay. For the time being we're the first Club in the country to have them.

Our new and one off autospot machine has just arrived. It allows users to place dumb bells in any position they want prior to beginning their exercise. Perfect for those exercises where you struggle to get dumb bells into the start position.
